Land Be Mine (2023)
Fired clay, sand, sandstone, wood, felt, prints, stickers, magnifying lenses, and found metal. 47” x 47” x 50”
Land Be Mine began as an opportunity to learn new ceramic skills and explore clay foraging during my time as an emerging artist-in-residence at Franconia in 2022. The project seeks to uncover connections between the clay and the land it’s sourced from - right in Franconia’s grounds.
At the centre of the work is an elephant made from foraged Franconia clay and coated with sand from the St. Croix River. The elephant stand over the assemblage of objects as a symbol of acknowledgement. AS a creature in captivity, it also encourages the viewer to experience the work with empathy and understanding. Its figure draws from the colloquial phrase, “I’ve seen the elephant,” which represents the idea that by seeing something so out of the ordinary, one can gain a sense of worldliness.
The work also contains a curated collection off booklets, geological samples, and ceramics. Each is presented as an object of wonder, reflecting unique and intimate stories about Franconia’s landscape and the communities that live to protect it. Through this collection, my aim is to help the viewer better understand how the Minnesota-Wisconsin border region fits into a larger, more global narrative of geo-politics and power.
Installed at Franconia Sculpture Park in Franconia Commons.
